Water beads are a very popular sensory bin material, and no wonder: they're glossy, gorgeous to look at, and satisfyingly slippery to the touch. Sadly, they can also be deadly for children who eat them, or put them in their ears or nose. As a kindergarten teacher, I can say with confidence that it's not only "sensory seeking" kiddos who try these avenues of sensory exploration. All children explore their bodies and the materials in the environments around them. Microplastics that expand when wet are not only a terrible idea for the environment, but potentially fatal for children.
