The pigeon is filthy! Do you think he should take a bath? He's got some really good arguments against the idea...
Mo Willems' instant classics "Don't Let the Pigeon..." is one of our favourite series in children's literature. The reasoning! The arguments! The excuses! We adore Pigeon. Bonus: written in the first person, Pigeon is gender-neutral and equally engaging for kids of all genders.
- reasoning vs. excuses
- wants vs. needs
- desirable vs. advisable
Teacher Tips: This book makes a great kick-off to a literacy unit on persuasive writing! Use it (or any of Willems other Pigeon books) to teach older students about how to make strong, well-reasoned arguments, and avoid weak ones as well as logical fallacies. Similarly, it would serve as an excellent prompt in an oral language unit introducing debate: should the pigeon take a bath?
